Monkey Boyz

Somewhere on the lower East-Side…

Detective DaCosta had decided pretty early on that this was going to be a long night. Up in the rafters of the old abandoned Church the Costani brothers lay in wait. They had railroaded him earlier in the evening and it felt like something in his shoulder was badly bruised or at worse snapped.

Jaken and Christo Costani were notorious hoodlums; their speciality was ‘splice and smash’ raids on unsuspecting civilians. Splicing was highly illegal and suicidally dangerous but had been a boon to the criminal underclass of the city. The Costani brothers had spliced themselves with primate DNA giving them the strength of two silver back gorillas and the agility of a howler monkey. The chase had lasted some forty-five minutes, starting in Video-Stat on fifth; a number of poor unfortunates had been forcibly relieved of their valuables and left with their heads spinning. DaCosta had pursued the Costani brothers across freeways, through crowded shopping malls, over rooftops. These guys could swing from lampposts, scale two story buildings and leap over parked cars with ease. Luckily being part of the Special-Splice squad imparted certain benefits. The exo-suit was one. It boosted the speed and agility of a normal human male by 80% and the re-enforced plasticate body armour provide some protection against splice attacks. Without it the Costani brothers would have outrun him, smashed him in two or both. The other was the Koresheen 2000 Stum-blaster: Packed with electo-stun bolts, gravity cage and a kill charge powerful enough to take out a bull elephant sometimes Dacosta felt like his job was more pest-control than police work.

DaCosta felt the insistant fizz-fizz of the com-link in his ear.

“Yes, Commander Stepovitz?” he answered

“What the hell are you doing DaCosta?” blurted the Commander. “I don’t pay you to play with that thing in your pants I pay you to catch Splicers.”

“I’m pursuing a couple of fugitives on the lower East-Side Sir.”

“Well wrap-it-up DaCosta! We need you back at the station ASAP and illegal Splice Flight got out of hand and there are corpses everywhere. I need every available man on this.”

“Yes Sir! On my way - Just as soon as I’ve dealt with these two monkeys”

Behind him, Dacosta heard the familiar thud-slap of simian foot on cold stone. It was defiantly going to be a long night. He turned, Stum-Blaster in hand and fired.
